(C) Belle Marsh
The Hatfield's and McCoy's
The Hatfields and McCoys
a bloody feud
Where hell ensued
Lives blown away
Roseanna and Jonse's
Love was stayed
140 years to abate.
They buried in a pact
The seeds of hate
Signed and sealed
The end of war
Took a hundred years and two score
To sign a truce?
If they can do it
So can you
Lay down the knives that
Bury you
Of gangs that rip and rape and tear
The clanging gates
The screams of fear.
What point was ultimately made?
When the currency was in lives paid
Writing inspires me internally and externally. It is what makes me tick. I was born telling stories and fairytales. Yet I have real world opinons and love writing them down too.

The Keeper - all views welcome.
Here is a new poem that might make it to my next book. I am still honing it so any comments would be appreciated.
I am a keeper
I don't do 'he's not that into me.'
I'm not interested in flaky excuses
If you do not phone me
I'll to do the same thing twice
I have no time for the sort of men
Who aren't very nice.
Don't bother with that
Easy, easy gleamed eye'd smile
It doesn't work on me
You can try it on other women
It's some peoples cup of tea
Because I am a keeper
I can wait and wait
I've seen your type come and go
Your masculine allure soon abates
So, when your fat, still trying your moves
Pathetic as you pull
I'll have the kids, security
and you will be the fool
So stare across this crowded room
Look me in the eye
Don't bother with sincerity
It would only be a lie.
Play around and waste your time
Leave love hearts shattered, broken
I care not for your company
That's why we have not spoken

PUSSY CAT, PUSSY CAT WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN
Inspired by the strays that I lured from the top of my very long garden, my other two cats and those that have gone to that great kitty place in the sky. An homage to cats.
It struck me as entirely apt and in line with my belief in connections that at the same time as I wrote this poem two coincidental things occured. I wandered into Waterstones and discovered that the number one bestseller there is called 'A Street Cat Named Bob' about a homeless man saved by the love of his cat and additionally in a bizarre double convergence my daughter entirely unbeknown to me, had seen the author, with Bob, while in central London.
I empathise entirely with the idea that a cat might utterly change a life. It took two years to lure Peanut and Jessie two scraggy, undernourished strays from the top of my 200 foot garden to the bottom where love and good food improved their lives and that is a story I might write in a bit of flash fiction sometime.

Anyway, here is the poem.
I love my cat,
Furry, velvet, patty pat
Brush me gently,
Just like that.
Pat, pat, patty, patty pat
Purry, whirry, sleepy cat.
Paddy paws, tummy fat.
Tatty, matty, latte cat.
Silky paws, sat on mat.
Milky whiskers, mices scat.
Fatty, natty, catty cat
Silent, shifting, pretty cat.
Disappears, just like that.

From Behind the Mind contemporary poems.
BELLE MARSH In response to a facebook comment . I write all sorts of poems some deep and some light and I've put them all in the book. It really helped me through a mid-life transformation where I felt lots of new emotions. Everything suddenly became brilliantly coloured almost as if I was hallucinating lol. I felt like a teenager and had to rein myself in to avoid doing something crazy. Everything around me became vivid and facinating. It was downright weird. I have even got nonsence poems in there. I am feeling a bit more even now and I hope I can still find a muse.http://www.amazon.com/FROM-BEHIND-THE-MIND-ebook/dp/B0097SBW3U/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1347602175&sr=8-2&keywords=From+behind+the+mind
I see the shadow of age upon my face
Like a mask
A chiffon veil, sheer, almost imperceptible
Like a geisha, haunting, translucent
Prostituting its last favours
Selling a picture that hardly exists
A history , a memory.

What's up with the Letter 'U' (guest blog)
DANIEL IS ON OUR MAIN BLOG 'SHARDPUBS.BLOGSPOT.COM
![]() |
| Daniel 'Pursued by bear' |
I was helping one of my editors get his book on Kindle the other day. While working on his manuscript, my spell check kept telling me that he had spelt many words incorrectly. However, upon further inspection, I noticed that my spell check is set to
‘US English’. Therefore, it picks on words like ‘favourite’ because it has a ‘u’ in it. I don’t know why but I’m definitely fan of the US, [if there are any American princesses out there, who wish to whisk me away, this is your chance ;)] certainly over the UK (no offence people in the UK)…
This experience must have planted the seed, because as I was driving the other day, I couldn’t help but think what the purpose of the letter ‘u’ is… So then, I wrote about it (evidently), and this is what I scribbled. It’s a real rambling piece of writing about absolutely nothing important ;)
What’s up with the letter ‘u’? It seems to be an almost pointless letter… I mean favourite or favorite? It does not really matter. The inclusion of the ‘u’ did not change the meaning or even enhance it. So really, it’s only there to please the British (say that part with an English accent). Colour or color? Honour or honor? Endeavoured or endeavored? Neighbour or neighbor? Rumour or rumor? It’s the same story with all of these.
Maybe I’m just lazy. Maybe the Americans are lazy. Lazy or not the good ol US of A is still the largest economy in the world. Yes, yes, it’s tough times for them currently and China is nipping at their heels, but for now, they cling onto their number one spot.
It seems the English language all started, well in England (go figure). However, America, the bullies that they are (i.e. the biggest economy in the world) decided they wanted it their way and made the necessary changes. It’s kind of like them starting wars when they don’t get their own way (WMD’s, ya right, my left foot). Let’s just hope China doesn’t get too much bigger else, who knows what our alphabet will look like… :)
I was born in Durban, South Africa in April 1983. I didn
’t have a very happy childhood. When I look around, I see so many more children going through similar things. They just manifest what they are going through in different ways, the most common manifestations being drugs and alcohol. That’s why I write about my childhood now and promote my book.

FORSOOTH I AM A POET.
MY NEW #POETRY BOOK FROM BEHIND THE MIND IS LAUNCHING SOON.
CAN'T WAIT.
Here is one that didn't make it to the book.
Somewhere I lost my mojo
I don't know where it's gone
The place I put my laughter.
The place I put my fun.
I no longer whistle loudly
Or look out at the birds.
I hear people speaking
Mean and pointless words.
Several things have come about
To make me feel less strong.
Death, loss and rejection
Feeling put upon.
I need to find that mojo
To help to set me free,
To sip the sunlit waters
To get me back to me.

Books for Bunnies #Blog blast
Books for Bunnies
Blog
Blast – August 8, 2012
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Books for Bunnies
Books for Bunnies is
an event set up by the blogger over at The Bunny’s
Review and
coordinated with the help of blogger Alchemy of
Scrawl.
These two ladies have
worked tirelessly in getting authors to donate eBooks for the event. Currently there are over 100 eBooks that
have been donated, along with over 30 print books. Some of the print books are even signed by
the author’s themselves.
The event is to help
raise money for the House Rabbit Society. The
House Rabbit Society (or HRS) is a 501 non-profit organization to help raise
awareness and to rescue rabbits from animal shelters. Below is a little about the background of the
HRS.
House Rabbit
Society Background
House
Rabbit Society
is a national, nonprofit animal welfare organization based in Richmond,
California. Our mission has two parts:
- Through our fostering program,
volunteers rescue abandoned rabbits and find permanent adoptive homes for
them.
- Through education, we seek to
reduce the number of unwanted rabbits — and to improve bunnies' lives — by
helping people better understand these often misunderstood companion
animals.
In line with our mission,
we are against the exploitation of rabbits.
Since HRS
was founded in 1988, over 25,000 rabbits have been rescued through our foster
homes across the United States. Many of these bunnies had run out of time at
animal shelters and were scheduled for euthanasia; others had been deemed
"unadoptable" because of age, health, or disposition. Because there
is no time limit on our rescued rabbits, HRS foster parents are able to spend
time getting to know each individual bunny and can then match him or her with
an appropriate home. We neuter/spay all incoming rabbits, obtain any necessary
veterinary care, and attend to their social needs.
In caring for so many
diverse bunnies, our all-volunteer organization has learned a tremendous amount
about their social, behavioral, and medical requirements. By sharing the
collected information these rabbits have taught us, we are able to help other
people improve their relationships with their rabbits. HRS
provides educational materials to veterinarians and humane societies and helps
individual rabbit people solve behavior and health problems, primarily through
our web site, www.rabbit.org, and our
quarterly publication, House Rabbit Journal.
Over the past 20 years, HRS has grown from 300 to more than 8,000 members, with
local chapters and educators in over 30 states plus Canada, Italy, Hong Kong,
Australia and Singapore. Our web site, www.rabbit.org,
is accessed over 100,000 times a day by people in dozens of countries around
the world.
We are asking people
to donate money to the HRS at this link through Network for
Good. The person that makes a donation will
receive either an eBook or print book equal to the amount donated. There are books ranging in price from 99
cents to $27.00. There are several print
copies of the books that have been autographed by the author.
The person that
donates will receive an email thanking them for donating. That email needs to be forwarded to books4bunnys@bunnysreview.com. This
will show the amount that has been donated.
Please remember there is not any donation that is too small. Any amount will be greatly appreciated. The HRS will use the money to either help
pay for vet bills or help in finding a forever home for the hundreds of bunnies
in their care.
Please if possible
take a moment to donate a couple of dollars to the HRS you never know what bunny’s
life you might be saving.
Orange flames shot skyward, greedily
licking at the amber‑colored logs, while smoke filled the
air and almost choked him even at that distance.
He drove as close to the house
as he thought he safely could and roared, “Liesel! Where are you?” He laid down
on the horn, but nobody came running to meet him.
He ran all the way around the
house, but he didn’t see her anywhere. She must still be inside! As hot air seared his eyes and face,
he fell back from the force of the blaze. A solid wall of intense, voracious
flames blocked the front door, but an outside staircase leading to a second‑floor balcony was still passable.
He ripped off his shirt and
tied it around his mouth and nose, then dashed up the steps to the balcony. Smoke
billowed and swirled against all of the windows. He stared inside but the smoke
prevented him from seeing anything. With no warning the window burst outward,
spraying his chest with glass and barely missing his face. Hot sparks pelted
his bare skin, raising water blisters, while small shards of glass worked their
way into his skin.
He saw a set of French doors
in the center of the balcony. It looked like the most likely spot to enter the
upstairs. He kicked out the glass near the doorknob and flung the door open.
Smoke billowed out in black, thick, suffocating clouds, but the room hadn’t
caught fire yet.
From Behind the Mind is coming to Kindle
Belle Marsh's new poetry book is due to launch on Kindle this month.
"I am so excited about this. I love the cover and the feel of the book. Poetry is something I love and when I registered the book with the Writer's Guild I realised there is no turning back it is really going to happen. Here is a little taster of one my favorites and one I have published on quite a few poetry sites and which has resonated with people.
Tangle Ties to Manatee by Kalen Cap Blog tour.
Belle's Review
This an unusual novel because it is written from the perspective of several characters. The story in essence involves a manatee, a type of dolphin endangered in the real world, zoo patrons, its staff, and two con men.
This an unusual novel because it is written from the perspective of several characters. The story in essence involves a manatee, a type of dolphin endangered in the real world, zoo patrons, its staff, and two con men.
The starting point for anyone reading this novel is to really understand that the writer Kalen, is an enviromentalist campaigner and therefore his novel is trying to make an entertaining point.
Incidentally, for female readers, I love the name Kalen and frankly from his photo Kalen cuts quite a dash.
I think the readers starting point should be that Kalen is intending and in keeping with the environmental themes here, that for every five paperbacks sold of his novel, a tree willl be planted via donations to the nonprofit, American Forests.
I think the novel has the potential to attract an interesting demographic and if it does could do very well.
My main critique is that I found the novel unusual and somewhat disjointed, because it swaps from one character to another by name. I got slightly lost at times. However, I appreciated the sentiment and I found it a happy novel, easy to read and I loved the final resolve.
Perhaps again, I would be too old an audience. The story circles around young characters and the story I suspect is directed toward the younger audience. Audiences who love animals would also find this an attractive read.
It was interesting to revolve a story around the manatee and I felt myself feeling sympathetic to the characters and I came to care for the manatee and the unfolding link between it's fate and the characters. Essentially the elements of the story are that the manatee, Ankh, has no idea how many human relationships, problems, and dreams tangle around her.
When the con men surprisingly succeed in bringing the grid down, it spells danger for Ankh, her unborn pup, and the many people tied to them both. With investigations of their own, Cecily and Janelle try to untangle it all to find Jerry, save a manatee’s life, and rescue Vera from herself.
Tangled Ties to a Manatee is a humorous crime thriller with environmental themes revealed through multiple points of view. The novel emphasizes college-aged characters, though not all, such as the developmentally disabled ones, are in college.
Whilst this may not be my usual read I think that it is a laudable effort to do something different, namely make a point in an entertaining way and do something good with some of the proceeds.
Personally, I would give it 3.5 stars. The author should continue on the journey to hone his craft. But I am willing to bump it to 4 for the determination to bring the plight of animals in captivity to our attention. That deserves some praise.
I would be excited for those taking part in this review tour to connect with the author in some of the posts here and to dig deeper into the purpose of this novel, as I suspect that it will be his relationship with the reader that will win them over.
The tour is running for a while and I expect it to gain momentum.
jam, tea and fangs.
Had interesting discussion with writer,friend who asked what I liked so much about crossing a whodunnit with a vampire touch. Well this is no Twilight I said. The story starts with a haughty aristocrat in the 1920's noticing her young attractive gardener. she laments that they can never be together. Their lives are so different. Not just because she is an aristocrat.
But their lives entwine in an event that will catapault them to the present day when the slaying of an American business man brings them together after 83 years.
I loved writing it because I love the theme of unrequited love, desire and mystery. The story is really a combination of all three. It is just so something I wanted to read I told my friend.
In my world vampires cannot love,eachother, or at least desire gets in the way of that higher state of love. They thrive on hunger and their vampire needs which make them rather cold on the outside, but inside they are a boiling pot of emotion. I love the idea of an Agatha like whodunnit married with the comtemporary twist and feel that it is a great new genre that can be enjoyed by mystery lovers and paranormal fans alike. i wanted to re introduce the delicious fun of the whodunnit to a bigger audience while still not making it wildly gothic. I think the book has a cosy lightness of touch and is a great Sunday afternoon lazy read with a little vampire spice. I am so enjoying myself I have already nearly finished my next book in the series where Lavinia Cusworth and Jimmy Kaelly carry on their criminal investigations. the next one is set in a Vicarage which is typical of the English Villiage mystery genre except there are vampires abroad.
Writers tip - blog tours.
I have been sidetracked recently with personal issues and so unable to post regularly but hopefully I am back in the saddle.
I thought I would do a little post about blog tours. If you have not heard of them, the idea is that a host company takes your book and you on a virtual tour to other blogs.
The host who have contacts push your books via blog sites, readers, and other contacts to provide a relatively cheap form of promotion. It is worth checking that your host pushes your type of books. YA fiction and fantasy do seem to do particularly well. Touring is a paid pursuit so be aware in to check prices and what you get for your money and whether such a pursuit is going to pay dividends. The other option which is the one that interests me is becoming a host for blog tours.
The tourer will push readers to your site and the hope is that whilst there they will also pick up your book. I have not honed this craft yet but will be trying it for some months to see whether the tours provide any residual publicity for my own books. thus far nothing but it may be that I need somesort of attractive hook somewhere on my site pushing the reader to it as well as the tour so all an experiment.
Goddess Fish and Lightening Book Tours are two I have come across who seem reputable. I have hosted a tour here and on shardpubs.blogspot.com recently and am doing more. I would welcome views from others on the success they have had with tours. don't forget there is nothing to stop you setting up your own tour with blog mates if the idea attracts you. good luck.
My book the first in the Cusworth and Kaelly mystery series is available on the side icon click to go to Amazon for Hoxton Kirby Vampire Investigators and Declan Munro's thriller with a twist Nightingale vale, also on the side icons. We are also at Shardpubs.blogspot.com
David Pereda's However Long the Night. A good read.
Highly Recommended.
I was somewhat nervous of doing a professional review, what if I don't like the book? However, as I had the opportunity to choose the books that interest me on this tour, I was delighted to settle down with David Pereda's book However Long the Night and discover myself pleasantly transported to another country, namely Cuba, and a different world.
During my research I discovered the book was the Winner of the Lighthouse Book Award for fiction and the Royal Palm Award for fiction,
The book in short is a sweeping romance with the depth of suspense and political and historical intrigue. This gives the book weight.
The main character Cid, is a man who discovers that the whole edifice of his success is a lie perpetrated by his own father. Much of the book is set in Cuba and the writing which is sweeping and descriptive evokes the warm sensuality of the country. I have been to Cuba myself and so it was a secondary pleasure to be transported to a living breathing Cuba, rather than the one portrayed for the consumption of holiday makers. It will certainly make me appreciate my experience there all the more. The story is exotically sumptuous.
The account transports one on the journey of a Cuban family forced to leave Cuba during the boatlift of 1980. The story is focused on Cid who arrives as a teenager in the United States. He goes on to become successful as an architect in Miami with all the accoutrement of the role. The book however avoids predictability by launching us into a world of intrigue surrounding his father's past in Cuba. I will not go into the details as it will spoil the story. Suffice to say Cid's journey risks danger and intrigue.
As a skilled writer David Pereda manages to keep the mystery of the story suspended thus engaging the reader to the very end.
I was hooked by the three dimensional complex character development and the swirling description. As a writer myself I have certainly learned a thing or two. I have nothing but admiration for the quality of the writing and the awards previously won are well deserved.
I give this book a well deserved 4.5. The story will stay with you and give you a satisfying excursion into pastures new crossing as it does the area between fiction and faction. Certainly a page turner and one to add to the library. I would be tempted to read it more than once as there is bound to be more to get out of it with each read.
SUPERNORMAL
So what is the difference, if any between paranormal/supernatural. We think the genres probably straddle each other but do readers agree that "Paranormal" includes folklore, legends, or unproven things outside the norm. In my case vampires.
"Supernatural" is perhaps more specific, SUPER NATURE as it were, possibly semi scientific or metaphysical, or miraculous. A sort of subcategory of paranormal.
Each nowadays also straddles science fiction which is potentially a subdivision of paranormal, say crop circles, aliens etc.
Nowadays, fairy tales also feature largely, which we presume are paranormal/supernatural.
WHAT DO MY READERS THINK? Perhaps our books are SUPERNORMAL!
Favorite Mystery?
What is your favourite mystery book or TV series? I really love a good whodunnit and in my Cusworth and Kaelly books I am trying to emulate the twists and turns in a really good one but with an added dimension. I love mixed genre, it is a way of shaking up the traditional while preserving the essential elements of the formula, providing a new way to enjoy a mystery. Try out Hoxton Kirby Vampire Investigators first book. Blood Red Sheets and find out for yourself while we are still $0.99c or £0.77 in the UK. Thanks. Belle.
“Thank you.” said Liv.
As she buffed Liv’s nails, she began to talk. “I was turned
by my employer in 1871, I was a parlour maid." She carried on conversationally.
“He said he loved me that I was everything to him, I wasn’t. I drove a stake
through his heart in 1876,” said Angela absently. Liv raised her eyebrows, to
stake another vampire was almost heresy. “I suppose I was different to the
thoroughbreds he was used to. A game girl, isn’t that what they called them.” Her
fingers curled around Liv’s hand tightly. She cocked her head “So, were you
murdered?”
